Dear Parents/Carers

Across the school we are having a huge push on learning our Times Tables. We have found that many of our children struggle to retain their knowledge of the tables and as they move onto learning a new table, they forget the ones they have learnt previously!

As a result, we have changed the way that we are teaching tables in school and we wanted to keep you updated.

Each class has been allocated specific times tables which they will focus on within that year. These are shown below:

Class 1:
Counting in 2s and 10s

Class 2:
2 and 10 times tables

Class 3:
3 and 5 times tables

Year 4:
4 and 6 times tables

Year 5:
7 and 8 times tables

Year 6:
9, 11 and 12 times tables

From Class 2 onwards, the children will be taught their tables in the format of:

“1 times 2 is 2,
2 times 2 is 4,
3 times 2 is 6...” etc.

Although the children will be given opportunities to work on other tables, the expectation will be that they are completely secure in their allocated tables by the end of the year. This will mean rote rehearsal of the tables (like we used to do!), regular quickfire questions and other games and activities to help them become completely secure.

We would really appreciate your support with helping the children to learn their tables and this is why you will find a strategy booklet accompanying this letter.  This is just to give ideas of games and activities that you could do with your child at home to help them with their tables. The booklet can also be found on our website!

As always, thank you for your support!
